Shoes

The implementation of shoes is the most underestimated ESD process

Shoes are often seen as the perfect answer to the inconvenience of heel/toe straps.

We would strongly advise a carefully managed program for the following reasons:

  • Shoes have to be specified, tested, fitted, purchased, stored, and replaced.
  • Consensus on the choice of shoe is dependent on ESD compliance, philosophy (one versus many styles), comfort, price, availability and service.
  • One pair of shoes or two per employee. Many employees will not like wearing the same shoes everyday.
  • The program will require a cross functional team (production, personnel, purchasing, facilities, finance) all will have strong positions on what approach to take.
  • Staff can presently choose,  style, colour and fit, with everyday shoes. With ESD shoes you will limit that choice. When choice is limited staff feel that have lost something. It is difficult to persuade people that loss of choice is for their benefit. An effective complaint process is required.

The simple most important factor with shoes is COMFORT. Uncomfortable employees standing for eight hours are unlikely to be productive.
